Councillor Frances Nunziata and her office, the Toronto Parking Authority, Artscape, and the other involved parties have been working hard to overcome the many obstacles at this site to make this development happen.

Weston is being presented with an opportunity for the redevelopment of the John St. parking lot that seems poised to deliver on the elements from the Top Ten Ideas, ideas we asked for back in 2011 in the Weston Design Charrette: an Artscape cultural hub with artist live-work studios and a re-visioned Weston Farmers’ Market integrated into a well-balanced vision of new residential space.

Many of you will recall that in the Fall of 2009, the Weston Village Residents’ Association brought you the Top Ten Ideas for Weston (brought to us by former Chief Planner of Toronto Prof. Paul Bedford and his University of Toronto class) that would put us on a path to positive redevelopment of our beloved Weston.

Number one on that list is the following:

  • town square concept to form the heart and central meeting place in Weston on John Street
  • re-use the vacant concourse area to the west of 33 King to incorporate an indoor component of the farmers’ market with outdoor stalls adjacent and on the west side close to parking
  • introduce a mix of recreation, community centre, artists studio lofts, non-profit offices into podium of 33-35 King along with a park and community gardens on east side of existing parking lot and on the green covered rail corridor deck with possible bike lanes

This proposal appears to have the potential to have a profoundly positive effect for Weston.
